Abstract Social Survey Division of the Office for National Statistics (ONS) employs approximately 700 interviewers at any one time. The interviewers use laptops and computer-assisted interviewing for the vast majority of data collection. Since the late 1980s we have been using the Blaise software as our questionnaire development and interviewing tool, and all interviewing and support systems have been DOS based. With the increasing use of Windows and Windows-based software, ONS are now at the stage of considering a move to the Windows operating environment for interviewing. This paper looks at the issues around a move to Windows in terms of its usability by interviewers. It discusses new possibilities and constraints of using Windows-based software; interviewer views on usability; and training options for interviewers.
